Media Empowered to Champion Safe and Fair Labour Migration in Kenya

The International Labour Organization (ILO) hosted a high-level Media Breakfast Meeting in Nairobi to enhance the media’s role in shaping accurate and rights-based narratives on labour migration. The event, held under the Better Regional Migration Management (BRMM) programme and funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), drew participation from journalists, government officials, and representatives of workers’ and employers’ organizations.

Themed “Enhancing Media’s Role in Promoting Safe, Regular, and Fair Labour Migration,” the meeting sought to strengthen collaboration between the media and key labour stakeholders. Through direct engagement, the ILO emphasized the importance of responsible reporting in combating misinformation, supporting policy awareness, and promoting fair recruitment practices. The session aimed to equip the media on balanced narratives around migration. By engaging journalists and editors directly, the ILO sought to deepen understanding of the complex realities surrounding labour migration: ranging from governance and policy reforms to fair recruitment and reintegration of migrant workers.
