Nairobi is set to become the center of East African martial arts as the 2026 UFAK Region East Karate Championship heads to Kenya later this month in what is expected to be one of the region’s biggest karate competitions in recent years.
The four-day championship, scheduled for May 28 to 31 at the Nyayo National Stadium Indoor Arena, will bring together elite karate athletes, referees, coaches, and officials from 14 countries under the banner of the Union of African Karate Federations (UFAK).
The tournament is expected to showcase high-level competition across cadet, junior, and senior divisions, with athletes battling for medals and regional supremacy in both individual and team categories. Organizers say the event will not only celebrate sporting excellence but also strengthen unity and cooperation among participating nations through karate.
Kenya will field a 50-member national team that has been undergoing intensive residential training ahead of the championship. Preparations have included a rigorous two-month camp supervised by certified World Karate Federation coaches, focusing on tactical execution, endurance, discipline, and technical refinement.
Team Kenya captain Francis Wamukui expressed confidence that the host nation is ready to challenge for the overall title after finishing second during the previous championship held in Ethiopia.
According to Wamukui, the team’s preparation and the advantage of competing before home supporters could provide the extra motivation needed to outperform regional rivals.
Kenya heads into the competition encouraged by its strong performance in Ethiopia, where the national team secured 20 medals — including 10 gold, nine silver, and one bronze — to finish just behind the hosts in the overall standings.
Among the athletes set to represent the country is Mercy Wamboi, who challenged stereotypes surrounding women in martial arts and encouraged Kenyans to support the national team during the championship.
Wamboi noted that female athletes make up a significant portion of the training camp and are determined to prove that karate is equally a sport for women. She said the tournament will offer an opportunity for many people to witness the growing impact of women in the discipline.
The championship is also expected to attract influential figures from the global karate community, including senior officials from UFAK and the World Karate Federation, reflecting Kenya’s growing reputation as a host for major international sporting events.
In addition to the competition itself, the event will feature coaching clinics, referees’ seminars, technical courses, and examinations aimed at improving officiating standards and developing karate talent across Africa.
The Kenya Karate Federation has thanked the Government of Kenya, sponsors, security agencies, medical teams, volunteers, and members of the karate fraternity for supporting preparations for the regional tournament.
With anticipation continuing to build ahead of the opening ceremony, organizers are now calling on sports fans and families to turn up in large numbers and support Team Kenya as Nairobi hosts a major celebration of martial arts excellence.
